And he(Jesus) was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, master, carest thou not that we perish?
39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, peace be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.”
A clergy man once told us a story of how God manifested his love when we thought we’re forgotten. A woman who felt neglected by God made up her mind to commit suicide. While preparing to take her life, she locked the door, thinking life is over. God is not interested in my case she said. As she held the rope for her last moment, she heard a knock on the door, but refused to open. A teenage evangelist who had gone out with his father for tract evangelism was determined to save a soul with the last tract remaining with him, kept on knocking. At last, the woman reluctantly opened her door. She was surprised to see a young boy with a gospel tract saying – God loves you, hand her the tract, and went his way. “Lord forgive me”, prayed the woman. “I thought you have forgotten me”.
Sometime, life challenges made us to doubt the existence, and the love of God. Like the disciples of Christ on the storming sea, we questioned God’s ability and faithfulness. We have forgotten that even the very hairs of our head are all numbered. Luke 12:7
When Darkness Seems To Hide His Face
Behold,I go forward, but he is not there; and backward, but I cannot perceive him:
On the left hand, where he doth work, but I cannot behold him: he hideth himself on the right hand, that I cannot see him.
It’s depressing and heartbreaking when you’ve tried all you could to get heaven’s attention to no avail. You praised, prayed, and fast often. Rather than getting result, it appear God is indifferent to your situation. You felt abandoned and broken. You even wonder if the love of God is real.
The story of Job in the bible repletes moment after moment of God seeming quietness. He lost everything he had in a day. Left alone with miserable friends who misunderstood and misjudged his circumstance. Worst still, his wife spoke foolishly to him to “curse God and die”. The way and manner Job friends and his wife reacted to his predicament were a demonstration of human errors and failures because they were shortsighted and limited in their understanding of the doing of the Almighty.
Even though men will always be men, the most perplexing thing is when the All-knowing God appears to men in your situations. The reality about God seeming quietness during challenging moment is based on our feeling and perception. God has not given up on you, don’t give up on Him. The Lord Jesus Christ is still the very present help in times of need. A loving Saviour, and a great Shepherd of His sheep. His seeming quietness is not a sign of weakness but a working of great miracle.
So, when darkness appears to hide His face in your moment of needs, God expect you to do the following while waiting to see the brightness of his face.
- Remember His faithful Promise : I will not forget thee ( Isaiah 49:15) : We must not be overwhelmed with challenges to the point we forget the promises of God. The scripture abound with countless promises of the faithfulness of God. You can be sure to find one suitable for your situation. The promises of God never go out of fashion. It’s real and reliable. It’s sure and steadfast. As dependable as God himself. Never take His promises for granted, because God meant everything he promised, and promised everything he meant. God is not a joker neither a liar. The bible affirmed that “faithful is He that promised, who also will do it”.
- Reflect on His Previous Deeds: Many a time, we suffer for the need of the present because we fail to acknowledge God for the deeds of the past. The demanding nature of human override our sense of gratitude. We’re mostly concern about the urgency of the present needs without minding the ungodly act of ungratefulness. We easily forget that our God is a God of again and again. What he has done, he can do much more today if only we learn to appreciate him. So therefore, count your blessing, name them one by one. It will surprise you to know that you have more to thank God for in your life than you ever imagine.
- Rest on His Unchanging Grace: It’s natural for you to worry when in trouble. The disciples of Jesus were frightened despite His presence in the ship. Believers are not immune from life’s challenges neither are we novice of it. The Lord Jesus said to his disciples in John 16 verse 33; “these things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulations (troubles): but be of good cheers; I have overcome the world”. Amidst these troubles, the Lord Jesus gave a resounding and reassuring hope to believers of His exceeding grace. He said to Paul, “my grace is sufficient for thee”. The grace of God is deeper than the deepest of all Sea. Wider than the widest of all Ocean. Higher than the highest Mountains. Come to think of this, if the greatest need of man(salvation) have been procured and provided for through the grace of God in Christ Jesus, how much more your need, which is least of what grace can accomplish.
I’m sure you know now that Jesus truly cares? Even when darkness seemed to hide his face , don’t worry, just rest on His unchanging grace.
